Every type of news you read and watch from news print, blogs, to the Internet, we are reminded daily of reasons why we shouldn’t consume too much carbohydrates. A lot of us, especially people of black descent that are prone to Type 1 diabetes and every other person prone to Type 2 diabetes carefully watch our carbohydrate consumption in hopes of regulating our blood sugar but have you ever thought of the advantages of eating carbohydrates?
A lot of professionals concerned with fitness have hammered on the importance of being on a low carbohydrate diet and participating regularly in strength training as the best combination for getting lean and fit. People that eat foods that are rich in fats, less than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day and moderate amount of proteins are said to be on a ketogenic diet. This diet can significantly help to increase the way their bodies rely on fat for energy and also help burn more of the body fat in an efficient manner.
It should however be noted that eating too little carbohydrates can have a number of unpleasant effects on the body. Some of this effects are subtle and may go unnoticed but if any of the red flags below persist for more than two weeks, it maybe an indication for you to add up your starchy and carbohydrate foods (as much as 200 grams if you’re watching your weight) to your diet. But for some, going too low on Cs can backfire.
Constant And Repeated Headaches
When your body is short on blood glucose, it may burn fat for energy and produce some molecules as by products known as ketones. This is excreted from the body through urine along with sodium and it may cause severe dehydration, constant and repeated headaches. The best way to combat this is to get carbohydrates back into your diet, drink lots of water during the day or gulp down on any supplements containing sodium before embarking on a workout session or physically exerting activities.
Repeated Chills And Cold Spells
Carbohydrates are important for the body as they help the body produce a number of antibodies that help in fighting off diseases. If you’re the type of person that consumes less than 100 grams of carbohydrates per day, there’s a likelihood that you may fall sick often. Carbohydrates that are unrefined such as sweet potatoes are important in boosting the production of antibodies and can inadvertently keep you healthy and free from colds and other illnesses.
Constant Fatigue
Whether you’re at work, on the road or in the gym, if you find yourself feeling more than a little tired after engaging in very little exerting activities, your body may be telling you it needs more fuel. It’s best to slowly add up your carbohydrates and watch your strength get back to normal. Before undergoing any physical or mentally exerting activity, try to eat an apple or banana to help provide your body with the fuel it needs.
